Karma Backpackers

Good Value, Home-From-Home Hiking Base

DOUBLE ROOMS - ZAR 550 per room

DORMS - ZAR 250 per person

Karma Backpackers is in Kestell, midway between Durban and Johannesburg and on the doorstep of the Drakensberg Mountains. Karma is the closest backpackers hostel to the start of the Tugela Falls hike, and is also within easy reach of Golden Gate Highlands National Park and Lesotho. Karma provides comfortable, squeaky-clean self-catering accommodation. Options include double rooms, dorms and camping. Facilities include a well equipped self-catering kitchen, shared bathroom (with, unusually for a hostel, a real bath tub) and free WiFi. Continental breakfasts are served.

Karma’s owner, Vera Ann, is well known in foodie circles for her award-winning jams and marmalades, and guests can try as many different flavours as they like. Free tea & coffee with milk & sugar, and free in-season vegetables and fruit from Karma’s garden add up to especially good value for money. For those seeking a quiet, homely atmosphere, or simply an inexpensive place to sleep on the way to the Tugela Falls hike, Karma is a good choice. Add a reputation for a generous, friendly host and you have many reasons why Karma is a good base from which backpackers can explore the Northern Drakensberg, Lesotho and Golden Gate.
