Wilderness - Garden Route - Western Cape - South Africa

Fairy Knowe Backpackers

ARTY PARTIES IN MIDDLE EARTH

PRIVATE ROOMS - ZAR XX

DORMS - ZAR yy

CAMPING - ZAR 160/night

Fairy Knowe Backpackers is set in a forest between high cliffs and a winding river, in the beautiful little town of Wilderness, about 470km from Cape Town.

The property is very large, with a distinctly Lord Of The Rings feel to it. The buildings are widely spaced and joined by quaint paths, with lots of space for camping under ancient Yellowwood trees. Accommodation, consisting of a mixed dorm, private

rooms, as well as a communal kitchen is in a historic building dating back to the 1870's. It has a breakfast deck with great views over Wilderness' river. A vibey bar with a live music stage is set some distance from the rooms, together with a restaurant and a reception area with a lounge and library.

Art is everywhere, with murals, wooden sculptures and a fantasy labyrinth adding to the folk-magic atmosphere. It's a very sociable place, and it's easy to strike up conversations with complete strangers in one of the many sitting areas. Open Mike nights, where anyone can try out their singing talents, are held in the bar on Wednesdays, and dress-up parties, weekend craft markets and other events make for an excellently interesting and friendly holiday experience. You won't be bored or lonely here.

There's lots to do in Wilderness, whether it's visiting local restaurants and art galleries, taking scenic drives, or hiking along boardwalks in the Wilderness National Park. The Garden Route is known as an adventure destination, and activities such as paragliding, horse riding, kayaking, canyoning and abseiling are on the agenda.

WiFi in the bar area and main house is free, as is coffee, tea, sugar and milk. There are supermarkets in Wilderness village, a short drive (or a nice scenic walk along the river) from the hostel.
